Critical points on the poultry farm: Cleaning & disinfection

Cleaning

Cleaning should start as quickly as possible after loading the chickens.

  1. Clean with broom and shovel to remove the bulk of the dirt

  2. Sufficiently long soaking phase

  3. Using a soaking agent before the washing phase:

    • Improves the penetrative capacity of water in dirt thanks to its moistening effect

    • Dissolves the fat in manure by its detergent capacity

    • Helps to remove biofilm

  4. Foam/Gel cleaner:

    • Longer contact time

    • Greater soaking-in time

  5. Using a soaking agent after washing phase:

    • Better quality cleaning

    • Better result from disinfection

  6. Rinsing phase:

    • Use high pressure

  7. Let it dry!

Disinfection

A good disinfectant needs to meet a number of requirements:

  • Broad spectrum

  • Quick and efficient in low concentrations

  • Sufficiently effective where organic materials are present

  • Good penetrative capacity

  • Doesn’t damage the building equipment

  • Is compatible with the water and detergent you are using

  • Works even at lower temperatures

  • Non-toxic for people or animals

  • Biodegradable

  • Registered disinfectant

Disinfection: spray or foam

Foam:

  • Increases the contact time

  • Better penetrative capacity in porous surfaces

  • Stay in place longer

  • Much quicker to apply

  • Less consumption

  • Visible
